Darwin's 200th Bday

"A Gallup poll released this week shows that 39 percent of Americans say they "believe in the theory of evolution," while a quarter say they do not believe in the theory, and another 36 percent don't have an opinion either way.

This follows an earlier Gallup poll on the issue, conducted last May, that found only 14 percent of Americans believe that humans developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life. Forty-four percent believe that God created human beings almost overnight within the past 10,000 years, and another 36 percent believe that God guided humans' evolution from animals over a much longer period of time." (Azadeh Ansari, CNN)

Really?! Wow. People need to get educated.

Interesting. But being educated doesn't necessarily mean much. The educated once thought that the world was flat, that the sun traveled around the Earth, that bleeding people would make them better... Boy was science wrong! Wouldn't the most amazing scientific discovery or proof be the existence of God? Maybe God just got the ball rolling... Is it really outside the realm of possibility? Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) it's a question we will likely never know the answer to... no matter how much we learn, or how educated we become.

Yes, education can mean little. I should have been more clear with my "education" comment. I guess it all depends on who's doing the educating and what the current knowledge shows.

It just amazes me that there can be so much known in science (and lots yet to be discovered) and people still don't believe that evolution exists. It's happening right before your eyes! Open them up!

There will be arguments going both ways from now until who-knows-when, but it just shocks me that people don't realize these basic facts. Evolution doesn't detract from religious view-points as these are two totally different topics that do not have to co-mingle.

Okay, I could go on and on and get all references in order, but I think I'll back away for the moment. =0)

Speaking as a religious/spiritual dude, I don't believe that science will ever be able to prove the existence of God. Belief in God requires the one thing for which science will never allow--a leap of faith. If God exists, then being able to prove his existence scientifically would indeed be amazing. But it would also be very troubling. Isn't the whole idea behind God the notion that he transcends our reality?

Having said that, were we able to produce the proof, I hope it'd be at a time when we humans have a lot of other things figured out. Like how to be nice to each other and share the planet without hitting each other over the head with big sticks.

Oops, I just saw something shiny. Gotta go....
